Text Box: Obituary of Elizabeth McCormick Bender: Hedrick Journal 14 January 1942

Daughter of William and Elizabeth McCormick, born near Highland Center, Iowa, December 15, 1860; died at Hedrick, Iowa, January 8, 1942. She was united in marriage to George W. Bender, March 12, 1885. This union was blessed with 2 sons and 4 daughters.

The husband died March 19, 1932, leaving to survive her, besides the children, 17 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Mary Knight, and a brother, Ben McCormick.

Sister Bender never made a public profession of her faith but held with growing joy to the faith of her fathers, that of the Primitive Baptists. She was kind, gentle and compassionate, and trusted in the mercy and grace of God. Through her many trails, He was her comfort.

Funeral services were conducted by the writer at Hedrick, where many gathered to share the sorrow with the bereaved family, which, together with the beautiful floral offerings, stands as an eloquent tribute to her memory. We left the body sleeping in the “silent city” of so many of her loved ones near Highland. May our dear Lord comfort all who mourn.—Burton L. Nay.

Text Box: The term Scotch-Irish was coined in America in about 1750 to distinguish emigrants of Scottish blood from the other Irish settlers in the colonies.
Text Box: “Greenbacker” in politics—refers to paper money “greenbacks” that had been issued during Civil War and afterward. The party opposed the shift from paper money, believing that privately owned banks and corporations would then reacquire the power to define the value of products and labor. They believed that the continued government control of the monetary system would assist farmers by raising prices and make debts easier to pay. (source: Wikipedia)
