Text Box: The surname Butler is English and Irish. It was the occupational name for a wine steward, usually the chief servant of a medieval household, from Anglo-Norman French butuiller (from buticula bottle, diminutive of but(t)is cask). In the large households of royalty and the most powerful nobility, it eventually came to be used to describe a servant of high responsibility in a noble household, mostly leaving behind its association with the supply of wine.
