Robert William’s father died the 4th of October 1838 leaving his land to his children. On the 28th of February 1846, Robert William Doak sold his share of the land to Reasoner Wilcoxson (believed to be a relative of his wife Elizabeth) and moved to Lee County Iowa in 1850. In 1859 they moved on west to Wapello county, Iowa where on the 30th of October that same year Robert and Elizabeth Doak became charter members of the Martinsburg Presbyterian Church. According to his grandson, Wallace Umbaugh’s obituary, Robert William and his family lived in a farm house 3 1/2 miles southwest of Hedrick, Iowa near Highland Center. The “History of Wapello County 1914” states that Robert had purchased the farm in 1858, being the “second man to receive a deed to the place”. The 1880 census lists Robert as retired from farming and living with his daughter Elizabeth Whipple’s family, after his wife's death.
The History of Wapello County 1914 also says of Robert William Doak “He resided in Highland township until his death and for a long period was well know as a representative agriculturist and honored citizen.” He became ill in 1879 and passed away four years later from phthistic or tuberculosis of the lungs in 1883 (aged 81 years and 11 months) per his death certificate. He is buried with his wife in Brooks Cemetery, north west of Hedrick, beside their son Thomas. |
